Secrets to Reduce Cancer Risk as Revealed by IACAN
This article was taken from Indo American News and has not been altered in content. There was mention of Hemp, which I believe if a perfect whole food for the bodies health and well being.
By Ritu Raju
HOUSTON: The Indian American Cancer Network (IACAN) has been diligently presenting talks and conducting activities to increase awareness of cancer and provide community support for cancer patients and families. Their latest event, held on July 10 at India House, included a presentation by Dr. Lorenzo Cohen, Ph.D. on “Living the Anti-Cancer Life.” Dr. Cohen, Director of the Integrative Medicine Program at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center has conducted multiple studies on the psychosocial issues of cancer. He presented some of his findings and shared valuable information with a packed audience.
Dr. Cohen referred the audience to the book, Anti-Cancer: A New Way of Life (2008) by Dr. David Servan-Schreiber which served as the basis for much of his work. Servan-Schreiber was diagnosed with cancer in his mid-thirties. After undergoing conventional treatments, he investigated a number of integrative approaches to the prevention and treatment of cancer.
Dr. Cohen emphasized that cancer is a lifestyle disease and needs to be proactively addressed by everyone. All of us have cancer cells in our bodies since we are all exposed to carcinogenous factors. The statistics are daunting. One in two men and one in three women will get cancer; however, only one in four will die of the disease. There are many factors in our natural defenses that we can harness to protect ourselves from cancer.
Dr. Cohen also outlined some of the main causes for the current (and ever-growing) cancer epidemic. These causes can be grouped under four main factors: nutrition, obesity, sedentary behavior, and stress/social support. Our food intake directly affects our exposure to cancer—the connection between meat and colon cancer, for instance, has been documented in a number of studies. The incidence of breast cancer has been directly linked to the presence of IGF1 (the insulin-like growth factor) that is generated in response to foods high in glycemic load (substances that cause an increase in insulin).
In particular, Dr. Cohen referred to soy oil, a key ingredient in all fast food and much prepared food, which is rich in Omega-6 Fatty Acids that cause inflammation and stimulate cell growth. The rising imbalance in the ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 in the western diet has led to the increase in cardiovascular disease and a whole host of other health problems. In addition, lifestyle changes such as declining physical activity and increasing stress levels have resulted in elevated risk levels.
However, there are many changes that we can make in order to reverse these risks. Dr. Cohen’s concept of an integrative lifestyle can help us introduce easy-to-implement changes in our daily habits to dramatically reduce our exposure to cancer. These measures fall within the ambit of three areas: physical, social, and psycho-social. Of these, nutrition is the most immediate and controllable factor. Dr. Cohen listed several ingredients that are vital to Indian cooking as possessing anti-inflammatory properties; notable among these are turmeric, chili peppers, ginger, and garlic. In addition, foods such as grapes, honey, green tea, soy beans (not to be confused with soy oil mentioned earlier), tomatoes, and cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage and broccoli are all rich in anti-cancer phytochemicals.
He noted that we should try to eat these foods rather than take them as supplements which may not work the same way as natural foods. Dr. Cohen offered several other suggestions including fish and other Omega-3 rich foods such as hemp and flax seeds. He noted that food synergies make a significant difference; for example, blueberries are known to be rich in anti-oxidants. Combining them with apples, oranges, and grapes raises their anti-oxidant powers manifold.
Making the point that eating the correct foods in the right combinations can dramatically alter the expression of cancer, Dr. Cohen presented an image of the perfect anti-cancer plate: plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and a small amount of protein derived from fish or legumes/other plant sources. What is notable is that this is, as he pointed out, “the very antithesis of the western diet.”
Besides nutritional strategies, Dr. Cohen also stressed the importance of physical exercise and the reduction of stress. Stress itself does not cause cancer; rather it impedes the body’s ability to fight inflammation and disease.
The most notable part of Dr. Cohen’s presentation was the segment devoted to the findings of his research on the effects of yoga on cancer treatment. In a landmark study, Dr. Cohen tested the effect of yoga and stretching on the treatment and outcomes of women undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Six months after undergoing radiation, the yoga group (did yoga in addition to conventional radiation therapy) and the stretching group (performed simple stretching exercises but did not receive formal holistic yoga training) reported much less fatigue than the control group (the group that did not practice yoga but only received radiation).
The yoga group showed dramatic improvement in physical functioning and overall general health as compared to the control group. Also, the ability to find meaning in life termed as “benefit finding”—was much higher for the yoga group. On a physiological level, baseline cortisol levels were excellent in members of the yoga group indicating better health. Thus, in all aspects, the yoga group experienced a myriad of benefits that were absent in the control group. The promising findings of this study have prompted Dr. Cohen to undertake a larger, more comprehensive study.
From Dr. Cohen’s discussion, the audience obtained clear insights into the following: cancer is a lifestyle disease; therefore, lifestyle changes play a significant role in both prevention and managing the disease. By improving nutrition, reducing obesity and stress levels, and increasing physical activity and social support, we can protect and strengthen ourselves against cancer and other diseases.

For the Love of Hemp!
When I was young, I often heard the saying, "For the love of Pete!" I read that it had something to do with St. Peter and Michelangelo. It's an expression of exasperation, usually. Maybe ole Michelangelo felt that way while painting at St. Peter's?
Today I say, "For the love of hemp!" Not out of exasperation, but out of admiration for this wonderful plant and what it could do for our economy and the eco-system if is was legal to grow in the United States. Hemp was made out by certain power-people to be a drug and evil. They intentionally tried to confuse industrial hemp with marijuana. I have written about this in a past article. It's now time to voice the truth! Industrial hemp could boost our economy and heal our land.
There is currently a movement afoot that is being empowered by a new division of ForeverGreen called Versativa. At Versativa, we are exposing the intention of some elitists and putting hemp in the limelight, declaring it a awesome, powerful crop that could brings billions into the U.S. economy! We have to import our hemp today at the tune of $400,0000,000 annually! That's a shame to our government! It's time to tell the truth! Hemp is GOOD, it's not a drug! Hemp is beneficial to humans and our planet. Join us in the movement to bring hemp farming back to the U.S. You can also make a substantial income doing so by promoting our awesome Hemp product line including our newest release: VERSATIVA INSPIRIN.

Versative is Helping the Hemp Revolution!
Back in May, when I signed up with Versativa, hemp searches on Google were about 1,000,000 a month. To date, hemp searches have surged to over 3,000,000!
Versativa is leading the way in making people aware of hemp and the wonders of this amazing plant. People who have visited my Versativa website end up doing more research and that is helping the cause.
Industrial hemp is NOT marijuana. It's a sustainable miracle plant that can produce tens of thousands of products including nutritional food. Versativa uses hemp in all their products including HEMPHORIA and PULSE. Versativa will be marrying land with sea in its new product INSPIRIN. INSPIRIN will combine Versativa Hemp with ForeverGreen's Marine Phytoplankton into a product that you can feel in seconds after taking it.
Join the hemp revolution! I never dreamed that I would even care about hemp, but since learning about this plant, I want to be part of the movement that will once again bring hemp farming and production back into the United States. After all, we are the BIGGEST hemp importers in the world! What? We can't grow it, but we import it?
Write your congressmen in support of H.R. 1831 introduced by Rep. Ron Paul to legalize the farming of Industrial Hemp in the United States.

Hemp Heals Land!
On April 26, 1986 one of the world's worse nuclear disasters took place took in Chernobyl. Of course, since than, Japan may be the worse.
The blast at Chernobyl heavily contaminated agricultural land within a 20 mile radius of the reactor. What do you do with land contaminated with radiation?
With the combination of a new technology called phytoremediation and a old crop called Industrial Hemp the Ukraine found a way to remove the contaminants from the land.
Hemp is proving to be one of the BEST phytoremediative plants in the world. Unlike it's cousin marijuana, it only contains a minute amount of THC, the stuff that makes you "high." Hemp is a natural God-given crop that can actually heal our land! Yet our government refuses to legalize it because of it's obsolete belief that it is a drug!
It has been proven again and again that you cannot get high on Industrial Hemp. As Ron Paul once said, "You would have to smoke a joint [made of industrial hemp] the size of a telephone pole to get high."
Politics with "certain" big business (take a guess what businesses) is keeping hemp growing illegal in the United States. As I have stated in other posts, some states are working to change all that and Ron Paul has introduced legislation to legalize hemp once again (H.R. 1831). Let's let our State representatives know that we support the H.R. 1831.
There is some great information at The Hemp Resource website to help educate you regarding industrial hemp. That is where my education started.

Hemp: Reasons Why it Should be Legalized in the United States

Ron Paul on Hemp!
This post is not to express political view, but Ron Paul hit the nail on the head and you have to love the man for it. Another reason why the United States should legalize the growth of industrial hemp.
If would would like to be part of a movement and an American company that promotes Industrial Hemp products, look at Versativa. Not only will you be helping our nation, but you will be helping your income through promoting Hemp based eco-friendly products.

Ford Had a Better Idea...Then They Killed It!
Way back...well, not that far back...in 1941 the Ford Motor Company produced an automobile with a plastic body composed of 70% cellulose fibers from hemp. It was Henry Ford's dream to produce a car that was grown from the soil! The car could absorb blows 10 times that of steel without denting!!!!! The car was also designed to run on hemp fuel. An organic car?
But guess what? Our dear government, being paid off by big business, made growing hemp illegal. Could you imagine a car that won't dent and would run on fuel produced from hemp? Who would want hemp to be criminalized? Tree growers, cotton farmers, oil companies, and many more who would stand to lose from a crop that could out-perform any of the aforementioned.
I am for the legalization of Industrial Hemp. I hope through what I post here, you will be too.
There is a great video of Mr. Ford's dream car at my VERSATIVA website. Look, listen, and enjoy!

Hemp & Marijuana-What's the Confusion!
Industrial Hemp is not marijuana! Industrial hemp contains less than 1% THC the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. Let me put it this way, trying to smoke industrial hemp to get "high" would be like trying to get drunk on non alcohol beer...it ain't happening!
What's the confusion with industrial hemp and marijuana? There really isn't any! It was planned bad press from big money people like William Randolph Hearst who led a crusade to ban industrial hemp. You see Mr. Hearst owned millions of acres of prime timber land and someone just invented a simpler process to make paper from hemp. Well that could not be! Mr. Hearst would lose millions. So old Randolph, a publisher by the way, created public panic about the "evils" of hemp and marijuana.
Another big money player was Pierre DuPont. Little ole Pierre held patten rights to the sulfuric ACID wood pulp paper process. He also held pattens on nylon rope made from SYNTHETIC petrochemicals.
Basically, news isn't made...it's created! People like Hearst and DuPont with the help of politicians like Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon, who needed their money created the panic and prevailed to outlaw industrial hemp. It continues today. Hemp is good! Hemp is better than wood and cotton for the making of paper and clothing. Hemp can be used to fuel vehicles...much better than corn. It's responsible for the manufacturing of over 25,000 products!
Versativa came up with an awesome website that explains what I am trying to say here in more detail. Take a look by clicking HERE.

California is Getting Even Closer to Legalizing the Farming of Industrial Hemp!
Here is a letter I just received from Vote Hemp:
We are very happy to report that SB 676, the industrial hemp farming bill, passed out of the Assembly Committee on Agriculture on a 6 to 0 vote! We have been able to attend each of the hearings in the Senate and Assembly and do some lobbying, too. Your support for our work has paid off very nicely. Thank you!
Left to Right: Patrick Goggin, David Bronner,
Bob McFarland, Senator Mark Leno and David Piller
There is one more committee hearing yet to come and we are very optimistic that SB 676 will pass the full Assembly and go to the Governor's desk for his signature.
We have been able to do this thanks to your generous support, but we need your help to reach the finish line. Please like us on Facebook and share our posts with your friends and follow us on Twitter and retweet our posts.
You can also help us by forwarding this email to your friends and family so they can follow our progress and consider making a donation, too. Thank you in advance for all that you do for the cause.

Hemp Beer? Hemp is Getting Attention Everywhere!
This article was taken from The Mansfield New Journal.
It's not often a beer makes me want a salad, but this new one did. The beer is Hemp Hop Rye, from O'Fallon Brewery. It was introduced in bottles this spring. I hadn't tried many O'Fallon beers, and the unusual ingredients caught my eye when I saw it on the shelf. So, I took a chance.
I've never seen a beer brewed with hemp seeds before, but it actually was the rye that made me pick this one up. Not long ago I tried Red's Rye PA from Founder's Brewing. I liked the dryness of the rye malts, the hint of whiskey flavors and the heavy levels of hops in that Founder's ale. I figured another rye beer might be a good thing.
And it was good, but on a completely different level.
O'Fallon bills this one as a "smooth and flavorful everyday beer that isn't overwhelming."
That sums it up accurately in my book. There is very little bitterness, and not much hoppiness. Cascade and Hallertau hops are used, but not at an intense level.
If you want a beer that goes all kung fu on your taste buds, this isn't it.
If you want a beer that tickles your taste buds, however, this might do it.
Let's start with the aroma. If you've ever been to an outdoor music festival or a rock concert, you know what marijuana smells like. I half expected the aroma of this brew to have some of that character, but it did not. It's a lightly scented beer that smells like beer, although perhaps a bit nutty.
I detected nothing in the flavor of this beer to remind me of that marijuana scent, either. The rye character was not as strong as I expected, but that left room for the hemp seeds to assert themselves. It ends up being a refreshing, subtle beer that would pair well with a light afternoon lunch, perhaps involving a fresh crisp salad with a lot of cucumber and some shrimp. The toasted hemp seeds add a pleasant, nutty flavor to this beer.
Hemp Hop Rye could be an everyday beer for some, although my everyday beers tend to be higher up on the boldness ladder. A drinker who likes a steady diet of smooth amber ales might find this one to be a nice change of pace.
About those hemp seeds: The connection with marijuana means O'Fallon brews this under close scrutiny. THC -- tetrahydrocannabinol --is the chemical in pot that makes smokers high. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that O'Fallon must submit samples of seeds to the federal government every time a new shipment comes in, to make sure there is no THC in the beer.
I certainly did not feel high after drinking mine, and at 5.5 percent alcohol by volume I didn't feel particularly buzzed, either. I did get a bit of the munchies, though -- if suddenly thinking, "This beer would be awesome with a fresh salad" counts as munchies.
Steve Goble is a copy editor and a beer snob. You can discuss beer on his blog at MansfieldNewsJournal.com/beer, or by following him on Twitter at Twitter.com/brewologist.
