Hemp Farmers Receive Investment to Heighten Exports

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA--(Marketwire - Nov. 21, 2011) - Canadian hemp producers will benefit from a boost to their marketing brand abroad thanks to the support of the Government of Canada. The Honourable Steven Fletcher, Minister of State (Transport) and Member of Parliament for Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia, on behalf of Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz, announced today an investment of more than $55,000 to the Canadian Hemp Trade Alliance (CHTA) as it kicks off its national convention in Winnipeg.

"Hemp food products are a rapidly growing market with great versatility, ranging from high quality flour and pasta to nutritional bars and even ice cream," said MP Fletcher. "Our Government is proud to help this industry capitalize on its successes and further enhance its competitiveness in international markets while bolstering the Canadian economy."

With this investment, the CHTA will promote the high quality of Canadian hemp to international markets. This will include placing the Canada Brand and new CHTA logo on promotional materials as well as a trade show booth. This investment will enable the Alliance to increase participation in key trade shows as well as invite international speakers to make presentations at its two-day national convention in Winnipeg, which began today.

"The funding support available to the Canadian Hemp Trade Alliance through the AgriMarketing Program has allowed us to undertake projects that would otherwise not be possible," said Kim Shukla, executive director of the CHTA. "These are projects that support the growth of the hemp sector, a sector with tremendous range of market opportunities encompassing green, healthy living from food to biofibres."

In 2010, exports of hemp seed and hemp products were valued at more than $10 million. This represents an increase of about 200 per cent from 2007. The CHTA is a national organization, representing those involved in Canada's hemp industry, which promotes Canadian hemp and hemp products globally.

The Government of Canada has also developed the Canada Brand strategy to help the Canadian agriculture, agri-food, fish and seafood sector distinguish itself from key competitors in international markets. The Canada Brand encourages buyers overseas to link Canadian products with quality, commitment, trustworthiness and the clean land and water for which Canada is known.

Tools and promotional products, including a stylized maple leaf logo, are available to registered Canada Brand members to help them develop marketing strategies and activities adapted to their own circumstances.

A BILL

To amend the Controlled Substances Act to exclude industrial hemp from the definition of marihuana, and for other purposes.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.

This Act may be cited as the ‘Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2011’.
SEC. 2. EXCLUSION OF INDUSTRIAL HEMP FROM DEFINITION OF MARIHUANA.

Section 102 of the Controlled Substances Act (21 U.S.C. 802) is amended--

(1) in paragraph (16)--

(A) by striking ‘(16) The’ and inserting ‘(16)(A) The’; and
(B) by adding at the end the following:
‘(B) The term ‘marihuana’ does not include industrial hemp.’; and
(2) by adding at the end the following:
‘(57) The term ‘industrial hemp’ means the plant Cannabis sativa L. and any part of such plant, whether growing or not, with a delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol concentration of not more than 0.3 percent on a dry weight basis.’.

SEC. 3. INDUSTRIAL HEMP DETERMINATION.

Section 201 of the Controlled Substances Act (21 U.S.C. 811) is amended by adding at the end the following:

‘(i) Industrial Hemp Determination- If a person grows or processes Cannabis sativa L. for purposes of making industrial hemp in accordance with State law, the Cannabis sativa L. shall be deemed to meet the concentration limitation under section 102(57).’.

Hemp Heals Land!

On April 26, 1986 one of the world's worse nuclear disasters took place took in Chernobyl. Of course, since than, Japan may be the worse.

The blast at Chernobyl heavily contaminated agricultural land within a 20 mile radius of the reactor. What do you do with land contaminated with radiation?

With the combination of a new technology called phytoremediation and a old crop called Industrial Hemp the Ukraine found a way to remove the contaminants from the land.

Hemp is proving to be one of the BEST phytoremediative plants in the world. Unlike it's cousin marijuana, it only contains a minute amount of THC, the stuff that makes you "high." Hemp is a natural God-given crop that can actually heal our land! Yet our government refuses to legalize it because of it's obsolete belief that it is a drug!

It has been proven again and again that you cannot get high on Industrial Hemp. As Ron Paul once said, "You would have to smoke a joint [made of industrial hemp] the size of a telephone pole to get high."

Politics with "certain" big business (take a guess what businesses) is keeping hemp growing illegal in the United States. As I have stated in other posts, some states are working to change all that and Ron Paul has introduced legislation to legalize hemp once again (H.R. 1831). Let's let our State representatives know that we support the H.R. 1831.

Hemp Beer? Hemp is Getting Attention Everywhere!

It's not often a beer makes me want a salad, but this new one did. The beer is Hemp Hop Rye, from O'Fallon Brewery. It was introduced in bottles this spring. I hadn't tried many O'Fallon beers, and the unusual ingredients caught my eye when I saw it on the shelf. So, I took a chance.

I've never seen a beer brewed with hemp seeds before, but it actually was the rye that made me pick this one up. Not long ago I tried Red's Rye PA from Founder's Brewing. I liked the dryness of the rye malts, the hint of whiskey flavors and the heavy levels of hops in that Founder's ale. I figured another rye beer might be a good thing.

And it was good, but on a completely different level.

O'Fallon bills this one as a "smooth and flavorful everyday beer that isn't overwhelming."

That sums it up accurately in my book. There is very little bitterness, and not much hoppiness. Cascade and Hallertau hops are used, but not at an intense level.

If you want a beer that goes all kung fu on your taste buds, this isn't it.

If you want a beer that tickles your taste buds, however, this might do it.

Let's start with the aroma. If you've ever been to an outdoor music festival or a rock concert, you know what marijuana smells like. I half expected the aroma of this brew to have some of that character, but it did not. It's a lightly scented beer that smells like beer, although perhaps a bit nutty.

I detected nothing in the flavor of this beer to remind me of that marijuana scent, either. The rye character was not as strong as I expected, but that left room for the hemp seeds to assert themselves. It ends up being a refreshing, subtle beer that would pair well with a light afternoon lunch, perhaps involving a fresh crisp salad with a lot of cucumber and some shrimp. The toasted hemp seeds add a pleasant, nutty flavor to this beer.

Hemp Hop Rye could be an everyday beer for some, although my everyday beers tend to be higher up on the boldness ladder. A drinker who likes a steady diet of smooth amber ales might find this one to be a nice change of pace.

About those hemp seeds: The connection with marijuana means O'Fallon brews this under close scrutiny. THC -- tetrahydrocannabinol --is the chemical in pot that makes smokers high. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that O'Fallon must submit samples of seeds to the federal government every time a new shipment comes in, to make sure there is no THC in the beer.

I certainly did not feel high after drinking mine, and at 5.5 percent alcohol by volume I didn't feel particularly buzzed, either. I did get a bit of the munchies, though -- if suddenly thinking, "This beer would be awesome with a fresh salad" counts as munchies.
